Teen and College Student Alcohol Use During COVID-19
March 1, 2021
EDGE Lab Director, Dr. Danielle Dick, and Coordinator, Emily Balcke, partnered with substance use researchers and Research-to-Policy Collaboration to develop a fact sheet, "Teen and College Student Alcohol Use During COVID-19" to inform policymakers across the country.
Research-to-Policy Collaboration works to bridge the gap between research and policy by emphasizing partnerships between research experts and legislative staff. Using data from Dr. Dick's university-wide project, Spit for Science, as well as data from national surveys on the impact of COVID-19 on university students, Dr. Dick and Ms. Balcke, along with VCU researcher, Dr. Ananda Amstadter, identified trends in college student substance use during the pandemic and developed policy recommendations accordingly. These were then combined with trends in teen substance use during COVID-19, identified by Drs. Joy Gabrielli, Renee Cloutier, and Jacqueline Hersh. This fact sheet has now been shared widely with state-level staff, state legislators, and federal staff working for federal legislators.
