March 11, 2021
EDGE Lab Faculty, Dr. Amy Adkins, has been named to The VCU Institute for Women's Health list of "VCU Women Making History" for Women's History Month 2021. Dr. Adkins is passionate about creating opportunities to engage undergraduate students in research and enhancing diversity in the behavioral research fields.
As Director of Undergraduate Research for the College Behavioral and Emotional Health Institute (COBE), Dr. Adkins develops and leads undergraduate research opportunities to include securing external funding, working with faculty and substance use-related research centers across campus to create research opportunities for students, mentoring undergraduate researchers, and directing and developing training programs for undergraduates from underrepresented groups.
Dr. Adkins also directs a summer research experience for VCU undergraduates from underrepresented backgrounds, "VCU Guided Research Experiences and Applied Training" (VCU GREAT) program. The GREAT program is an intensive, co-curricular, 8-week summer training program in which fellows have a one week “bootcamp” followed by a 7-week internship. The GREAT program has run successfully for the past two years, and Dr. Adkins is currently in the process of interviewing the candidates for the upcoming summer.
