Research Interests
My research interests center on understanding how genetic and environmental factors contribute to pathways of risk to substance use and related behavioral and emotional health outcomes. Currently, I am working on two lines of research: 1) examining the mechanisms (e.g., parenting, intermediate phenotypes) through which genetic predispositions influence substance use and related outcomes, and 2) examining how genetic predispositions interact with culturally-relevant risk and protective factors (e.g., racial discrimination, cultural socialization, ethnic identity) to influence substance use and related outcomes among racial/ethnic minority populations. The larger goal of my research is to understand how genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of risky patterns of alcohol and substance use to inform intervention efforts for individuals who are at risk.
